Student, Parent and Teacher Information

Program Information

The Yalbilinya Education Project (YEP) aims to assist First Nations high school students in Years 10-12 through the HSC and into opportunities beyond school. Our team is comprised of passionate, academically capable university student volunteers with previous tutoring experience. Students will be paired with volunteer tutors, who will provide support in two main ways:

1. Individualised, subject-specific academic mentoring and tutoring. This will include assistance with schoolwork content, homework and assignments, and exam preparation. We are focusing on Maths and English, and plan to offer additional subjects from 2022.

2. Pathways advice and practical guidance through tertiary and vocational opportunities, applications and entry routes. This will include being available to discuss potential post-school options, and supporting students with practicalities such as UAC applications, course entry criteria and ABSTUDY eligibility.

We also plan to run social events and speaker workshops throughout 2022, to hear from First Nations people about their stories, lives and career pathways.

Tutor Matching and Scheduling

After matching you with a tutor, we will be in contact via email and phone to organise an introductory call involving you, your YEP tutor and a member of our director team. This will allow us to explain the program, answer any questions and establish learning goals. Parents are welcome to join this introduction to meet the tutor too.

Following this, you and your tutor will arrange weekly tutoring sessions, which will occur over Google Classroom or in person at the South Sydney PCYC in Redfern. Directors will check in periodically to ensure everything is running smoothly.

Child Protection

All volunteers have current Working With Children Checks (WWCCs) and previous experience tutoring high school students. The safety and wellbeing of our students is our foremost priority, and we have a Child Protection Policy and Volunteer Code of Conduct that our volunteers have signed and agreed to.
